6 Halloween Costumes You Can Wear With Your Natural Hair

Harley Quinn

DC Comics’ bad girl, Harley Quinn, holds one of the boldest--and now one of the most popular-- looks ever created for a strong, female figure. Dawning bursts of pink and blue color throughout her hair and makeup, her look embodies the more fun, witty, and electric parts of her personality. Although she has always been depicted as a Caucasian woman with straight hair, women of color have taken the initiative to create more diversity in cosplay which has resulted in many different versions of Harley Quinn.

The Hair: For this style you do a wash and go for your foundation or a twist and curl using small perm rods on the end. Either way start by washing your hair with Curls Unleashed Rosemary and Coconut Sulfate free shampoo and be sure to condition and deep condition your hair before you begin styling. Products like ORS Curls Unleashed Curl Boosting Jelly works great because it defines your curls while also eliminating any frizz or flyaways. The Jelly is a rich in aloe vera and vitamin b which is designed to keep your hair soft and manageable especially if you decide to use temporary dyes or paints to achieve the look.

Garnet (Steven Universe)

Garnet is a real gem; No seriously, Garnet is one of the last gems on Earth. This ruby and sapphire fusion leads a group of rebels named the Crystal Gems as they position themselves as the guardians of humanity with goals to create a peaceful planet.

The Hair: My favorite way to mimic Garnet's hair is with a simple and effective wash and go. For a more defined and fluffy curl, try a perm rod set that is light fluffed at the ends and picked at the roots to create more volume. You can use the Shea Butter & Honey Curl Defining Cream to help you get the right look for a perfect Garnet!

Hilary Banks

Known as Will Smith's beautiful and spoiled airhead of a cousin on the Fresh Prince, Hilary Banks is one of the most recognizable faces of the 90s. Her iconic fashion sense on the show was an inspiration for a whole generation of women, and an accurate representation of what 90s fashion embodied.

The Hair: In early seasons, Hilary had natural, dark brown curls, but switched up in later seasons to a black, shoulder length cut with flipped out ends and bangs. If you want to mimic her hair above we suggest do a wash and go! Use the Curls Unleashed Rosemary & Coconut Sulfate-Free Shampoo to start and then condition and define your curls to create the perfect look.

Sade or Sza

Most artists have a look that fans will never forget, and often times, will try to recreate. For Sade, it's her timeless red lip and side braid and Sza will always be tied to her long, blown out and lightly pressed hair. The list can go on and on, but all you have to do is find a style that resonates with who you are and what you like and you'll absolutely NAIL the look!

The Hair: For a classic blow out try setting the your hair with a bit of Curls Unleashed mousse and let it do it's thing!

Susie Carmichael

Voiced by Cree Summer, little Susie Carmichael was the sweet and sassy voice of reason among toddlers and babies in Nickelodeon's hit shows, Rugrats. Her raspy voice, long ponytails, and purple flower covered yellow dress made her one of the more unique, beloved, and recognized Black animated characters of the 90s.

The Hair: Susie's ponytails we're never clearly defined as braids, locs, twists, or just plain old ponytails, but the costume does work best with jumbo braids or loose twists.

Section your hair into three parts, and style each section how you want it; rub a product like ORS Curls Unleashed Leave In Conditioner through your hair before you style to keep your hair lustrous and frizz free. Don't forget to secure the ends with red flowers or barrettes!

Riri Williams (Ironheart)

15-year old Riri Williams is a special character, and a great one for Black girls and women to celebrate, because it is the first time in history Marvel has depicted Iron Man as Black, or a young woman. Even more endearing? Her deep skin tone, larger-than-life curly afro, and hoop earrings gives us a look that a lot of us can identify with!

The Hair: I think it's important to note that type 4 hair, a TWA, finger coils, or any other natural style would look just as good as an afro. Yes, it's important to accurately represent a character, but there's no shame in letting what you like shine as well. The most important thing to remember when rocking a fro is ensuring that your hair is moisturized and allowing it to naturally take its own shape. As long as your fro is effortless you will have fun in character!
